What to check before joining a tutoring marketplace

15 October 2026

A tutoring marketplace can bring you your first students. It can also take more than you expect, in fees, in control and in peace of mind. Read the terms, ask questions and decide with open eyes.

This is a general checklist, not a comment on any one company. Every platform is different, so check the current terms of any you consider.

1. Fees and commissions

Why it matters: a tutor who earns a fair rate can end up with much less after deductions, and the effort stays the same.

2. Sessions and monitoring

Why it matters: teaching feels different when you are being watched. Some tutors say it makes lessons stiffer and less natural. Others welcome recorded sessions for safety. Know the rules before you agree.

3. Contact and ownership

Why it matters: the relationship you build with a student is your most valuable asset.

4. Ratings and visibility

5. Payments

6. Support and exit

An alternative worth knowing

Calista works differently. Certified handwriting coaches are listed in a directory, and learners message them directly on WhatsApp. There is no middleman in the conversation: you and the student agree the class. Read about how ratings work, then see how to apply.
