Handwritten cover letter: when to write one and how

18 October 2026

Most applications are typed, so a handwritten cover letter is the exception. Sometimes that is exactly what is asked for, and sometimes it is a choice that helps you stand out.

When to handwrite a cover letter

Otherwise, send a typed letter. A handwritten one that is hard to read does more harm than good.

Structure

  1. Your details and the date at the top.
  2. The recipient’s name and title.
  3. A short opening naming the role.
  4. Two short paragraphs on why you fit, with one concrete example.
  5. A polite close and your signature.

Keep it to one page.

Handwriting tips

If your handwriting needs work, our 15-minute handwriting routine is a good start, and a certified coach can review a sample. Finish with a signature you are proud of.

Check before you send

Read the letter aloud for errors, check the spelling of the recipient’s name and ensure the page is clean. If you make a mistake, rewrite the page rather than crossing out.
