Digital detox at work: a 90-minute screen-free reset
Most teams know the feeling: ten tabs open, notifications pinging, and a long day that somehow produced little deep work. A digital detox is a deliberate break from screens to rebuild attention. At work, it can be as short as one session.
Why a workplace digital detox?
Constant switching between messages, email and documents makes it hard to hold one thought for long. Many people notice that they feel busy but not productive. A planned, screen-free block gives the team a shared pause, which is easier than trying to find willpower alone.
What a screen-free session can look like
A good workshop is practical and gentle, not a lecture. Ours, the Digital Detox & Focus Workshop, is a 90-minute screen-free session led by a Calista Master Trainer. Handwriting is the tool: slow, deliberate writing is a simple way to bring attention back to a single task.
A typical structure:
- Arrive and switch off. Phones away, laptops closed.
- Settle the hand and mind. Slow, rhythmic writing exercises.
- Single-task practice. A short, focused piece of writing with no interruptions.
- Reflect and plan. Each person chooses one habit to keep.
Tips for running your own detox
- Announce it in advance so nobody feels they are missing messages.
- Keep it short the first time. Ninety minutes is a good start.
- Provide paper and pens so the hands have something to do.
- Follow up a week later: ask what stuck.
Make it last
A single session will not change habits on its own, but it shows what is possible. For daily practice, try the ideas in how to improve focus without a screen.
